- Probably would be a good platform to test the effects of radiation in interplanetary space. You could bring along test shielding and subjects for long term evaluation. Importantly, if the astronauts needed to get home quickly, they wouldn't be too far away.

- Space is cold but the solar radiation and equipment get hot. That is why the Apollo CSM had to perform passive thermal control rolls (called the barbecue roll) on the way to the moon. That is also why the shuttle HAD to open its doors upon reaching assigned orbit, to expose the radiators to space.
